Large Supermarkets In Korea Implement A Comprehensive Ban On Plastics
- Jan 08, 2019 -

The Ministry of the Environment of the Republic of Korea confirmed on December 31 that Korean supermarkets will completely ban the use of disposable plastic bags from 2019 to further reduce "white pollution."

The Ministry of the Environment of the Republic of Korea issued a statement on the official website saying that according to the "Law on Saving Resources and Promoting the Recycling of Resources", since January 1, 2019, more than 2,000 hypermarkets and 11,000 stores in South Korea have exceeded 165 square meters. The supermarket will completely ban disposable plastic bags.

In addition to the use of plastic bags such as fish and meat, the relevant hypermarkets and supermarkets can only provide customers with green shopping bags, paper shopping bags, recyclable containers and other items. If a disposable plastic bag is found, the merchant will be fined up to 3 million won (about 2,700 US dollars). Previously, the Korean Act stipulated that disposable plastic bags should not be provided free of charge in hypermarkets and supermarkets.

According to the amendment, more than 18,000 pastry shops that were not included in the “plastic limit order” will not be allowed to provide plastic bags for free from 2019. In addition, the Korean Ministry of the Environment is working to promote a number of new measures, including encouraging laundry to reduce the use of plastic clothing bags.

The Ministry of the Environment said that it will cooperate with local governments during the period from January to March 2019 to supervise the implementation of new measures for the ban. In an statement, the Ministry of Environment officials said that in order to protect the environment and benefit the next generation, it is hoped that the people will actively participate in the reduction of the use of disposable products and form an environmentally friendly consumer culture.
