Brief Introduction to Compostable Cutlery

Compostable cutlery is made from an industrially compostable bioplastic called PLA, or polylactic acids. It's made from either a corn starch or sugarcane feedstock, and it can be used to create versatile commercially compostable compounds that can then be molded into a variety of single-use products.

Advantages of Compostable Cutlery

Environmentally Friendly

The biggest benefit of biodegradable disposable cutlery is that it is environmentally friendly. Eco-friendly PLA plastic, or Polylactic Acid, is a type of plastic made entirely from renewable resources. Cornstarch is a common resource used to make PLA, which is entirely renewable and biodegradable. Our PLA products look, feel, and function just like traditional plastic products. Biodegradable cutlery, on the other hand, deteriorates much faster and does not release harmful chemicals into the atmosphere.

Less Pollution

The manufacture of biodegradable plastics is far less polluting to the environment than petroleum-based plastics. In addition, when plastics made from biodegradable materials eventually decompose, they break down into non-toxic, non-hazardous elements that degrade over time, and these non-toxic, non-hazardous elements are released back into the soil. They produce far fewer greenhouse gases than those made from petroleum-based materials, producing only 32% of the amount of petroleum-based plastics.

Less Energy

Making biodegradable plates and compostable disposables is more energy-efficient than making single-use plastics. Biodegradable plates and utensils require less energy to manufacture. In addition, the materials used for biodegradable plates and cutlery are renewable, so they do not deplete the earth's natural resources. Typically, these products are made from sugar cane, bamboo, corn, etc. Biodegradable plastics require only 35% of the energy needed to make petroleum-based plastics.

Versatile

Biodegradable disposable cutlery includes forks, knives, and spoons in separate packages or in premade sets and is versatile and can be used in a variety of settings. It is often used in restaurants, events, and even in homes. Additionally, biodegradable cutlery can be found in various shapes and sizes.

Application of Compostable Cutlery

Compostable cutlery is perfect for caterers. Catering businesses can easily produce large amounts of waste from running one big event especially if the company uses disposable flatware. Each person at every event uses multiple disposable forks, spoons, and knives throughout the wedding, banquet, or other event. More than likely, each person uses more than just one of the different utensils. If even a fraction of those products aren’t even up in the proper place, these disposables clog up our waste resources. PLA plastic flatware is the answer to this problem because each PLA utensil is compostable and friendlier to the environment.

Materials of Compostable Cutlery - PLA

Polylactic acid or polylactide (PLA) is a polyester made from renewable biomass, typically from fermented plant starch like corn, cassava, sugarcane or sugar beet pulp. While the feedstock (raw material) currently doesn’t compete with food production, manufacturers are already investigating the use of non-agricultural feedstocks. The environmental and economic advantages of PLA bioplastics over conventional plastics are measurable and significant.

PLA is a polyester (polymer containing the ester group) made with two possible monomers or ‘building blocks’: lactic acid and lactide. Lactic acid can be produced by the bacterial fermentation of a carbohydrate source under controlled conditions. In this case, the carbohydrate source can be corn starch, cassava roots or sugarcane — making the process sustainable and renewable on an industrial scale.

In addition to using the agricultural produce itself, crop residue like stems, straw, husks and leaves can be processed and used as alternative carbohydrate sources. This means we can make use of agricultural by-products that are left behind after harvesting that would have otherwise been thrown away. Residue that cannot be fermented can be used as a heat source, which can ultimately lessen the use of fossil fuel derived hydrocarbons.

Compostable Cutlery Production Process

We Need Resin

The raw materials, such as corn starch or sugarcane, are fermented to produce lactic acid. This lactic acid is then polymerized to create PLA resin. The resin is formed into small pellets, which are easier to process and transport.

Time to Dry

PLA resin pellets are dried to remove any residual moisture that could cause defects or inconsistencies during the manufacturing process.

Biodegradable CPLA Cutlery

Melting and Plasticizing

The dried PLA pellets are fed into an injection moulding machine, where they are heated and melted. The molten PLA is then plasticized, meaning it is transformed into a homogeneous, viscous mass suitable for moulding.

Biodegradable Disposable Plastic CPLA Spoon

Injection Moulding

The plasticized, molten PLA is injected into a mould cavity shaped like the desired cutlery item (e.g., fork, knife, or spoon). The mould is usually made of metal and designed to withstand high temperatures and pressures.

Cooling

Once inside the mould, the molten PLA is cooled rapidly, causing it to solidify and take the shape of the mould cavity. This process creates the rigid structure of the cutlery.

Finishing and Checking

Any excess material, such as flash or sprues, is removed from the cutlery, and the pieces are inspected for quality. This may involve checking for defects, such as warping, bubbles, or surface irregularities.

Ultimate FAQ Guide to Compostable Cutlery

Q: What is the difference between biodegradable and compostable utensils?

A: The main difference between the two is that biodegradable materials can take an undetermined time to break down. In contrast, compostable materials will decompose into natural elements within a specific time frame. However, it will require certain conditions like those found in industrial composting facilities to do so.

Q: Can I wash and reuse compostable cutlery?

A: Some compostable cutlery is strong and durable and can be washed and reused multiple times.

Q: How long does it take for compostable cutleries to break down?

A: When placed in the appropriate conditions, compostable utensils will generally decompose within 180 days, sometimes sooner, depending upon the exact type of resource that they are made of.

Q: What are the benefits of compostable cutlery?

A: The benefits of using biodegradable cutlery, such as being environmentally friendly, sustainable, cost-effective, healthier for humans and animals, and versatile, make it a better choice than traditional plastic cutlery.

Q: What is the temperature range for the compostable cutleries for sale?

A: The compostable cutleries have an upper temperature limit of 190ºF.

Q: What is the difference between PLA Plastic and PET Plastic?

A: PET plastic is a petroleum-based plastic while PLA plastic is a bioplastic typically made from fermented plant starch. While PET plastic can be easily recycled, PLA is more difficult to recycle and requires a special facility in order to be composted. Before disposing, avoid contaminating your recycling by double-checking whether your item is PET or PLA and the current disposal instructions for that material.

Q: How long does the cutlery degrade?

A: The Degradation time is around 3 months. The best storage time suggest based 10-12 months.

Q: How do I know if utensils are compostable?

A: A trustworthy compostable utensil will have a certification that proves its compostability. Look for certifications like BPI (Biodegradable Product Institute) and CMA (Compost Manufacturing Alliance). Even with a certification, you’ll need to determine whether your compostable tableware is commercially compostable, and compostable in your backyard. Look out for the words “commercially compostable only.” If this label exists, then your compostable utensils will not break down in a backyard compost bin. And they can last in the landfill for years.

Q: Can I burn compostable forks?

A: If your knives and forks are bona fide compostable and made from plants they will burn with a white smoke and a very light burning smell. If your knives and forks are petroleum-based, they will burn with a black smoke and give off a strong chemical smell.

Q: Are there any health benefits to using compostable cutlery?

A: Biodegradable cutlery is made from natural materials that do not release harmful chemicals. This makes it a healthier option for both humans and animals.

Q: Can I compost compostable cutlery at home?

A: Unless the label indicates that the product is okay for home composting, you should not try to compost it at home

Q: Can compostable cutlery be used for hot foods?

A: These eco-friendly disposable forks are manufactured from CPLA, a heat-resistant type of compostable PLA plastic, and are suitable for use with both hot and cold foods.

Q: Can compostable cutlery be used in the microwave?

A: No. It is designed to be heat resistant and used with hot food and beverages but it is not microwave-safe.

A: No, compostable cutlery typically does not have a specific taste or smell that is transferred to the food. The materials used in compostable cutlery, such as PLA (polylactic acid) or CPLA (crystallized polylactic acid), are chosen for their lack of flavor or odor transfer.

Q: How does compostable cutlery compare to metal cutlery?

A: Unlike plastic or metal utensils, compostable utensils are from materials that can be broken down by bacteria and other organisms. This means that they will eventually return to the earth as nutrient-rich soil, rather than sitting in a landfill for centuries.

Q: Are there different colors available for PLA cutlery?

A: Yes, PLA cutlery is available in various colors.

Q: Is PLA suitable for food?

A: Ultimately, as a pure material PLA is generally considered food-safe; there are no toxic chemicals in the polymer itself.
