Coca-Cola Amatil, Coca-Cola's australia-based bottler, has produced carbonated soft drink bottles made from 100% recycled plastic, in a move described as a "significant step" towards sustainability.

PLA Bottle

All disposable plastic bottles made by Coca-Cola Amatil in Australia will be converted to 100% recycled materials by the end of 2019.

Earlier this year, the bottler announced that 70% of its plastic bottles in Australia would be made from recycled plastic by 2020, reducing the amount of new plastic it USES by about 10,000 tons a year.

Alison Watkins, general manager of Coca-Cola Amatil, said: 'every drink bottle should be recycled and given a new life, not recycled in the Marine and terrestrial environment.'

But the pressure inside a soft drink bottle can be as high as 100 pounds per square inch, or about three times the pressure inside a car tire.As a result, soda bottles need to be much stronger than non-gaseous ones, which is an obstacle to making such drinks from 100% recycled materials.

"I am pleased to say that we have overcome this challenge through innovation and design."Alison Watkins stresses.

She says community and business pressures are driving the rapid growth of recycled materials in plastic beverage bottles.
